A post by: Matt DutilePPEdit and organize our websites, printed portfolios, collateral and promotional materials is something every professional photographer does at least once if not several times a year. It allows us the best possible vision of our work to our customers./PPAfter a build-up of new work it was time for me to also edit my portfolio. I have spent the last several weeks working on a powerful editing in preparation for a major annual marketing meeting and pushing and it occurred to me that this would make a good post for dPS. While the goal of organizational business justification is my edit, you don’t need to be a professional photographer to take advantage of a good organization of your images. Every level of photographer will find something valuable in it./PPHere are eight reasons why you should consider spending a little time screen and organize your photo collection./PPIMG class=”aligncenter size-full wp-image-65662″ alt=”Website Thumbnail Edit” src=”http://www.photo-natural.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/wpid-MattDutileWebsiteEdit.jpg” width=”600″ height=”501″/PPIf you do not have a good organization-system in place, there is little that is quite as droll as sifting through your images and important wording, tagging, actors, sort, and/or folder color coding them. But you want to distinguish yourself from your files, it helps to find them in a pinch./PPWithout a good system how will you ever find those pictures of the family Johnson if they decide that they actually want to buy some of you along the line? Or what about that shot you introduced a year ago on a National Geographic forum … and now they want to publish it!/PPNo matter what your system is, it is important to develop a. Just know yours in and out, just in case a cool or monetary opportunity in the future./PIMG class=”size-full wp-image-65998″ alt=”How could you find a file in this mess? ” src=”http://www.photo-natural.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/wpid-Lost-Folders.jpg” width=”600″ height=”315″How could you find a file in this mess?/PPSit down and organize your images from start to present gives you a good overview of how you have progressed since the first picking up a camera. You see not only the difference in content of what you’re shooting, but the quality of it as well. There is nothing like bemusingly head-shake inducing as watching some of the first images from your camera. How could you possibly ever been that bad?! Look back and see how far you have come and celebrate!/PPThere are some valuable lessons to be learned in organizing your photos, particularly recent ones. You will get a play-by-play look at the good images, along with the bad./PPSit and really take some time to think about what it is that makes you admire certain images, but dislike others. What do you right in this great ones? What did you do wrong in the poor countries? This critical evaluation will help you develop your eye and better images in the future./PPDuring a good review you will probably realize there are one, two or more errors that you consistently. New you will find every time you do this, and you know what in the future./PPDuring the past reviews I found I used to overexpose my images, or something that I was missing in night shots with my travel photos. Take the time to review allowed me to correct these errors and to strengthen the holes in my portfolio. I’m always finding something new to work on, and so will you. Learning from your mistakes is what makes you better./PPMaybe a year or two or more ago you took a trip to the Grand Canyon or photographed a really fun concept, but realize now that all the little things you missed or messed up on. now that you have are to organize you remember that great idea you had-and with your new found knowledge, it would be a good time to revisit the shoot and improve it./PPThere is nothing wrong with a concept that you are photographed before review and work to improve it. Many professionals are working on a project or a set for years before they think it is complete. Some scrub all they’ve shot and start over again on a concept they want to love, but with a new implementation. Think of it as a challenge to Re-invent something that you’ve already done./PPIMG class=”alignnone size-full wp-image-65997″ alt=”Color-Theme-MattDutile” src=”http://www.photo-natural.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/wpid-Color-Theme-MattDutile.jpg” width=”600″ height=”259″/PPIf you had your own website or already have one, how would you organize? There would be a portrait section? Or weddings and babies? Maybe landscapes and still lifes? Or travel and lifestyle? Most professionals organize their images by topic, project or theme. Do your own work can tell you a lot about what kind of photographer you think you are or want to be. What do you appreciate and enjoy shooting?/PPSearch for themes about your work of other than just subject. What you see appear is your specific style or vision. After a great time every photographer begins developing a sense of style, but you may be able to note the threads from the beginning. It is a clue to what you have in your images and your unique perspective value./PPIMG class=”alignnone size-full wp-image-65999″ alt=”Monk-Theme-MattDutile” src=”http://www.photo-natural.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/wpid-Monk-Theme-MattDutile.jpg” width=”600″ height=”259″/PPDo you have the desire to have your hobby professional one day, will now organize and understand how you would define your photography make it easier for potential customers to identify what they like about your work, or why they should hire you. the company of photography is defining what you to the market that is different, and at what value. The answering the question, “why should I work with you?”./PPThe last reason is one of the simple vanity. Organization, if done right, just looks nice. Often in my spare time I enjoy composing different color schemes, collages and themes. Some of them make their way to my marketing materials, if the idea turns out particularly well, others can completely change the way I categorize my business, and still others go into the Recycle Bin as a fun but failed experiment. Organisation need not only to be a boring task, however, it can fuel creative insight and help you develop your images./PIMG class=”avatar avatar-78 photo” alt=”” src=”http://0.gravatar.com/avatar/a7fe3a484e080898e3c9892c23b118c5?s=78d=blankr=G” width=”78″ height=”78″ PMatt Dutile is a New York City based travel and lifestyle photographer.
