Macphun changes its name to Skylum Software, following an expansion to Windows and pursuing the goal of bringing photographers a truly worthy Adobe alternative.
Bellevue, WA — After ten years, the award-winning software company known as Macphun has changed its name to Skylum Software, embracing a new vision and growth strategy emphasizing its flagship Luminar and Aurora HDR products as well as other enterprise and global ambitions.
Macphun began in 2008 as a company that developed apps for iPhone. In the first three years, the company released over 60 different applications, but the biggest successes came from their photography apps. Macphun topped more than 20,000,000 downloads with its most popular applications: FX Photo Studio, Silent Film Director, and Perfect Photo.
Early in 2011, the company launched its first photo software on the Mac App Store – FX Photo Studio Pro. A year later, Macphun received its first recognition from Apple – Snapheal was named among the Best Apps on the App Store.
Since then, Macphun’s products have been consistently achieving awards, including “Best of the Year” awards by Apple for six straight years. In 2017, Luminar was awarded “Best Imaging Software 2017” honors by TIPA followed in October 2017 by “Best Software Plugin” by the Lucie Technical Awards. Aurora HDR was also selected as the Best Mac App of 2017 by Apple.
In the fall of 2017, Macphun brought its two flagship products – Luminar and Aurora HDR – to the Windows platform. The company also worked with its first enterprise clients to bring its imaging technologies to business customers around the world.
“The new name better reflects our new vision of company transformation and is definitely a better fit, since we’re no longer a Mac-only developer, – says Alex Tsepko, CEO of Skylum. “We want Skylum to bring photographers the most innovative and fantastic photography software available. Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop are great tools, but we want to bring customers something even better. And we have the technology and the team to make it happen,” Tsepko concluded.
The name change is not the only move by Skylum of late to reflect the company transition. In December, the company announced expansion of its US presence with a new enterprise team and office in Bellevue, WA. In January 2018, four of the world’s best photographers formed a new Skylum Team of Ambassadors who will help the company refine its software to benefit photographers and help educate users on how to make better photos.
To celebrate the transition, they are discounting their two top products:
