Amazon Prime Day 2016: stats
Amazon Prime Day 2016 was the ‘biggest day in the history of Amazon,’ so you can be pretty sure it’ll now return every year until the end of time.
On ‘deal day’ this year, Amazon says it shipped 60% more products worldwide compared to Prime Day 2015, with a 50% boost in its home territory of the US. Meanwhile, Similar Web in the UK reported that traffic to the Amazon website itself was up 36%, with other UK retailers enjoying a traffic boost of around 22% despite making very little effort.
So what did everyone buy on Prime Day this year? Amazon says it sold 90,000 TVs and hundreds of thousands of Kindle Paperwhite e-readers. In the US, Amazon shoppers bought 18,048 pairs of headphones in the first three hours of Prime Day alone, but it wasn’t just US shoppers that went Prime Day mad.
In Italy, Prime members ordered enough Caffe Vergnano coffee capsules to caffeinate a married couple twice a day for 27 years – much cheaper than marriage counselling. French and Belgium shoppers bought so many games consoles in the afternoon you could stack them on top of each other to make a tower taller than l’Obélisque de la Concorde, while German bargain hunters bought more than 160,000 toys, board games and stuffed animals. French and German consumers clearly have their priorities nicely straightened out.
In the UK, customers bought more than 600 Trunki suitcases before breakfast, perhaps because they’re planning to leave the country, while the Philips Hue sale was also stunningly successful – enough smart bulbs were snapped up to illuminate the Royal Albert Hall with new lights every night for four and a half years.
A Song of Ice and Fire tablets
One of the most popular Amazon Prime Day items worldwide was George R.R. Martin’s seven-book A Song of Ice and Fire boxset – Amazon says that by lunchtime on Prime Day it had already sold enough of them to outweigh more than 10 Narwals. The irony there being that even compared to 10 horned whales, the Game of Thrones books still contain more bloat.
Amazon’s own Fire TV Stick, Fire tablet and Kindle Paperwhite were three of the other big hits on a global scale, while Spain went particularly mad for the Lenovo Z50-75 laptop.
In total, Prime members worldwide bought 215,000 pressure cookers, 200,000 pairs of headphones, 24,000 hamocks, 23,000 Roombas and 14,000 Lenovo laptops. Orders from Amazon’s shopping app doubled compared to Prime Day last year, with over a million people using the app for the first time.
"Prime itself is the best deal in the history of shopping, and Prime Day was created as a special benefit exclusively for our Prime members," said Greg Greeley, a man who is paid money to promote Prime. "We want to thank our tens of millions of members around the world for making this the biggest day in the history of Amazon. We hope you had as much fun as we did. After yesterday’s results, we’ll definitely be doing this again."

Fire TV Stick: Amazon Fire TV Stick. Streaming on a budget just got a whole lot cheaper thanks to this Amazon Prime Day deal that’s cheaper than Chromecast, now $ 24.99, was $ 39.99.
Apparel: 60% Off Athletic Shoes
Android devices: Nexus 6P and Huawei watch are a classy couple and Amazon Prime Day is offering a discount on both of up to 25% or more off the list price.
Kindle: Kindle Paperwhite. Reading is about to make you smarter, so don’t pay top dollar for an e-reader when you can get it for $ 89, down from $ 119.
Kindle: Amazon Fire tablet 7" gives you an entry level tablet for a low price, which is good news because you won’t find Amazon Prime Day iPad deals anywhere. It’s now $ 33.33, was $ 49.99.
Memory Cards: Sandisk memory products. You can never have too many memory cards for your camera, phone or gaming device, and now is the time to get them at up 40% off.
GoPro: GoPro 4 Sessions bundle: Capture everything in your line of sight without spending too much money thanks to this GoPro Amazon Prime Day deal.
Xbox One bundle: Xbox One Console, 2 Games and 2 Controllers make the perfect pairing today. It’s the starter kit for for anyone who wants a real videogame as soon as they tire of Pokemon Go. It starts at $ 279, was $ 408.
iRobot Vacuum: iRobot Roomba 614 Vacuum Cleaning Robot. You don’t need to vacuum your floor because you live in the future and Amazon Prime Day is giving you a nice discount from the original $ 379.
Fast & Furious: Fast & Furious 1-7 Collection. Can you ever have enough of Vin Diesel? The answer is most certainly no, and Amazon agrees with 65% discount on all seven movies.
Polaroid Printer: Polaroid ZIP mobile printers. Your printer is too big, and this one isn’t. Save space and save money, while also saving your memories in print form, was 44% off from the original $ 129.95.

Video game: Doom. Blast demons in half after taking half off the original price of the popular video game first-person shooter series. It’s up to 50% off.
Amazon Prime Day US: PS4 and Xbox One deals
There are some pretty good Xbox One and PS4 deals on offer here. They’re not what you’d call barnstorming offers but they’re better than any deals yesterday and for that reason alone it’s probably wise to pounce on one of these deals now if you like the look of one. Prices will return to normal tomorrow.
Xbox One: Xbox One 500GB Console – Gears of War: Ultimate Edition Bundle. Enter the future of video games while going back in time to relive one of the best shooters from Epic, now $ 259.99, was $ 299.99.

Amazon Prime Day US: TV and Home Entertainment deals
There are some great deals on home entertainment products here. The Amazon Fire deals themselves are brilliant – if you’re after a TV streamer to turn your old TV into a Netflix-streaming mega TV, the top two deals here are for you. Or if you’re after a cheap TV or a projector, there are some super deals too. We’ll be checking other sites throughout the day – not just Amazon – so we’ll update with all of the best deals we can find.

Amazon Prime Day US: Laptop and computing deals
If you’re after a cheap laptop, there are a few really enticing offers here. Firstly a Lenovo Chromebook for less than $ 200 – that’s an astonishingly good deal, especially if you just need a cheap laptop for surfing the web and checking emails. There are also a few excellent deals on Windows laptops and a batch of Microsoft Surface Pro deals if you want a laptop/tablet hybrid.

What is Amazon Prime Day?

To celebrate its 20th birthday last year, Amazon came up with Prime Day. It promised to deliver more bargains than Black Friday, and while some of the deals were less attractive than others there were still lots of tech deals and bargains to be found.
Amazon has decided to make Prime Day an annual event, and this year Amazon Prime Day is on 12 July 2016 – that’s this coming Tuesday, folks.
Like last year, the Prime Day deals of the day will only be available to Prime members, who will also get early access to lightning deals. But even if you’re not a member, there will still be plenty of deals and promotions from Amazon and plenty of other sites to take advantage on as all the big stores ride the ‘deals wave’ at a traditionally quiet time of year for retail.
Amazon has already confirmed that products with heavy discounts will include the Amazon Fire TV Stick, Amazon Fire tablet and Kindle Paperwhite e-reader.
As you’d expect, on Amazon Prime Day itself, TechRadar will be rounding up and linking to all of the deals we think are the absolute very best offers out there. We’ll also be keeping an eye out on all of the other online stores out there because they’ll be sure to do a bit of promotion in an attempt to get in on the action – we’ll list those deals too. In the meantime, here’s everything you need to know about Amazon Prime Day:
When is Amazon Prime Day 2016?
This year, Amazon Prime Day 2016 falls on Tuesday 12th of July, beginning at midnight Pacific Standard Time (PST). However, Amazon is also doing what it does with Black Friday and Cyber Monday – running a week of deals. The deals week started on the 5th of July.
Which countries will Amazon Prime Day be happening in?
Prime Day is running in every country where Amazon operates. Sorry, Australia 🙁
Get an Amazon Prime free trial to get the deals:
You need to be an Amazon Prime member to have access to the Prime Day ‘deals of the day’ but if you’re not a member and you don’t want to be a member, there’ll still be loads of promotions you can take advantage of – literally thousands of deals.
Prime, of course, is Amazon’s free delivery membership scheme, which has expanded to include streaming video, music, ebook rental and photo storage. If you aren’t currently a member of Amazon Prime you can take advantage of the 30-day free trial, which you can then cancel if you don’t want to continue as a Prime member. If you decide to stay, Prime memberships are $ 99 per year in the US and £79 in the UK. Last year Amazon took £20 off the price for Prime Day, although it’s unclear whether it’ll do the same this year.
It’s worth remembering that if you don’t want to remain in Prime after Prime Day you have to actively cancel the Prime membership before the free trial expires. If you don’t, you’ll be billed for a year’s subscription automatically.
What Amazon Prime Day deals can I expect?
Amazon says it’ll heavily discount more than 100,000 things on Prime Day, and there will be other promotions during the run-up to 12 July. For example, Prime Music is running a promotion to win "unforgettable experiences" with artists including Blink 182, Flo Rida, The Lumineers and others.
In the run-up to Prime Day you’ll see US deals such as a 32-inch TV and Fire TV Stick for $ 119.99. Expect Amazon to plug its Kindle, Kindle Fire and Fire products heavily – if you’re planning to buy one, you should probably wait until the 12th.
Confirmed Amazon Prime Day 2016 deals:
Amazon has already started to tease some of the deals that it’ll be running on Prime Day 2016. Or at least, it’s revealed some of the products it’ll be discounting – it hasn’t revealed what the prices are likely to be.
Amazon Fire Tablet: In the UK you’ll be able to save £15 on the Amazon Fire 7-inch tablet – it’ll be one of Amazon’s deals of the day running all day long for £34.99 instead of £49.99. That’s a very strong deal if you’re after a 7-inch tablet. See the Amazon Fire tablet at Amazon
Amazon Fire TV Stick: On Amazon Prime Day last year, the Fire TV stick was the best selling product and that looks like it’ll be the case again this year. Amazon has confirmed that it’ll be offering a juicy discount on this Smart TV streaming stick. In the UK that means £15 off and a price of £19.99 instead of £34.99. Amazon Kindle Paperwhite: Amazon has also confirmed that the Kindle Paperwhite will be on sale on Prime Day. In the UK we’re allowed to tell you that the price will be £79.99 down from £109.99 which is a saving of £30. See the Kindle Paperwhite at Amazon
Trunki suitcases: The first product that Amazon revealed will be getting the Prime Day deals treatment is the Trunki Ride-on suitcase. It’s a suitcase for kids, designed so they can ‘ride’ through airports under parent-power rather than walking. Readers in the UK might remember the Trunki appearing on Dragon’s Den back in 2010 – it was rejected at the time but has gone on to sell millions of units – oops.
Gibson electric guitars: The other product Amazon has revealed will be on sale on Prime Day are Gibson electric guitars. The discount will be ‘more than 20%’ so if you’re after a new guitar or looking to learn, come back to TechRadar on Prime Day and we’ll point you to the deal.
Last year’s Prime Day deals
Last year’s deals included 30% off Xbox Ones, 46% off Fire TV Sticks, 33% off Kindles, 50% off Kindle Fire HDs, 82% off DVD box sets and 75% off Blu-Ray box sets, 35% off projectors, 47% off headphones, 46% off smartwatches, 30% off cameras, 22% off SSDs… you get the idea. The Amazon products were all-day deals, but many of the other ones were lightning deals with limited stocks. When a lightning deal is gone, it’s gone.
Are there any special deals for students?
There are. Amazon Student offers a six-month free trial of Prime, including all the services bar ebook lending, and 50% off Prime membership if you want to continue after the trial expires. You’ll need to have an email address from a recognised institution; sadly the School of Hard Knocks and the University of Life don’t qualify.
Is it worth keeping the Prime subscription going?
It can be: Amazon Prime started as a free-delivery scheme but it now also includes unlimited photo storage, ad-free music, unlimited TV and movie streaming and early access to lightning deals throughout the year. If you use all of those things, $ 99/£79 isn’t a lot of money.
Are the bargains real bargains?
That’s a good question. Like many retailers, Amazon is very keen on comparing prices against RRPs (MSRPs in the US) that nobody really expects anybody to pay – so for example in 2013 the Wall Street Journal noted that an Amazon deal of 45% off a $ 1,799 Samsung HDTV wasn’t quite so impressive: the previous month, Amazon had been selling the same TV for $ 997.99, so the actual saving was less than ten dollars. Such deals are essentially the same thing as supermarket wine promotions or amazing, never-ending furniture sales.
If you have a particular product in mind it’s worth keeping an eye on the prices now to make sure the deals are genuine on Prime Day. We find sites such as PriceSpy invaluable, as they enable you to see exactly what prices are being charged for specific things – not just big purchases, but smaller items such as video games too.
Some of the deals will clearly be paper bargains like the one the Wall Street Journal reported, but that doesn’t mean all of them will be. Amazon will have been bargaining hard with key suppliers to cut the prices it pays for some products, and it’ll sell some high-profile items as loss leaders in the expectation of cross-selling, up-selling and, well, selling. From Amazon’s point of view it can lose money on big deals and make it back from Prime subscriptions and by shifting stock it wants to get rid of anyway.
Will anybody else offer bargains on Prime Day?
We think so. Last year, a whole bunch of retailers clambered on the Amazon bandwagon with deals that in many cases were better than Amazon’s: in the UK that included Zavvi, Curry’s, PC World, John Lewis, GAME and Argos. As we did last year we’ll be tracking all the best bargains on Prime Day and the days running up to it – not just on Amazon, but everywhere.
What should I do in the run-up to Prime Day?
It’s worth thinking about what you actually want or need and how much it currently costs, so for example if you’re quite keen on a 4K TV it’s worth looking at the current prices to get a feel for what X amount of cash gets you.
The likelihood of Amazon doing a brilliant discount on the exact make and model is microscopic, but if you’re flexible and you’ve done your homework you’ll know if a similar model is a banging bargain or a waste of money.
Think in terms of specifications, not specific models: you might not get a deal on the 55UE6523211-VHB-2E 55-inch TV, but you’ll probably get a deal on someone else’s equally enormous set. Don’t forget to use price comparison services and if it’s tech, our reviews here at Techradar: some things are cheap because they’re no damn good.

What is Amazon Prime Day?
Amazon promises "more deals than Black Friday for one day only" which means bargain prices – some of which will last all day, and some only for a few hours. For more information about how Prime Day is going to work, read our guide below.
When is Amazon Prime Day?
Amazon Prime day 2015 takes place on Wednesday July 15. Amazon will start offering deals on its websites from midnight (that is, 00:00 on the 15th) in each participating territory. There will be seven main deals available throughout the day, with lightning deals going live every 10 minutes.
Which countries will Prime Day be happening in?
The US, of course, but also the UK, Spain, Japan, Italy, Germany, France, Canada, Austria and Greece. We’re lying about Greece.
Can anybody take part in Prime Day?
No, you need to be an Amazon Prime member. If you aren’t already signed up, Prime is $ 99 / £79 per year.
For that you get access to Prime Day plus access to the Amazon Prime Instant Video streaming service, free ebook borrowing, unlimited photo storage and free delivery on Prime-eligible items (within 1 hour if you live in one of a handful of London postcodes or some US cities). If you’re a parent, your Prime membership also enables you to join Amazon Family to get 20% off the price of nappies.
Can’t I just sign up for a 30-day trial, order loads of stuff and then cancel the membership?
Yes, you could. Amazon thinks you should: "try Prime today and get immediate access on 15th July", the Prime homepage says. Amazon clearly hopes that you’ll sign up for Prime and either be blown away by the service or so disorganised that you’ll forget to cancel. Either way, it’s clearly going to get some new Prime members out of it.
What sort of deals will there be on Prime Day?
That’s an excellent question, and Amazon hasn’t really answered it. It says there will be "thousands of Lightning Deals and seven popular Deals of the Day".
If you haven’t seen Amazon’s lightning deals before, they’re limited-time or limited-amount offers that can offer huge discounts on a fairly random selection of things: in recent weeks the list has included whiskies, watches and fitness monitors; at the time of writing there’s 60% off a garden hose and 81% off a fancy watch on Amazon UK.
Amazon offered loads of lightning deals during Black Friday 2014 and there were definite bargains to be had, but as you’d expect the best ones sold out very quickly.
Here’s what Amazon has to say about its Prime Day deals. "Members will enjoy deals on items perfect for summer adventures, their to-do list, family road trips, back to school supplies, and everyday essentials." That’s not really narrowing it down, is it?
What should I do in the run-up to Prime day?
Assuming that Prime Day is going to be as exciting as Amazon says it is – and if it’s going to have more deals than Amazon’s Black Friday selection, then it might just be – then it’s a good idea to do two things:
1. Set a budget for whatever bargains you want to blag, and
2. Have an idea of what you actually want to buy before you go in.
Hoping for a good deal on an HDTV? Look at what’s out there, read our reviews and be prepared to be flexible: while we’re sure Amazon will discount all kinds of electronic and electrical items, the likelihood of it slashing the price of a specific model you’ve had your eye on for ages is close to zero.
Think in terms of specifications, not specific models: that way you’ll be able to tell instantly whether a bargain is the right bargain for you, or just money off something you don’t really want.
What else should I watch out for?
In retail, bargains aren’t always what they seem. We’ve seen Black Friday deals that looked like massive discounts but which were based on sky-high prices that nobody was expected to pay – the electronic equivalent of supermarket wine promotions and the sofa firms who always seem to be having massive sales – and high-profile sales are a great way of getting shot of end-of-line stock or of selling products bought in specifically to sell at low prices.
Back in 2013, the Wall Street Journal described retailers’ sales practices, including Amazon’s listing of a $ 1,799 Samsung HDTV with 45% off the sticker price: a month previously, the same set was $ 997.99.
Retailers are also known to raise prices in the run-up to big sales events, so for example in the weeks before Black Friday prices of all kinds of goods just happen to go up. Funny, that.
